Police in India have released a pigeon suspected of being a Chinese spy after eight months. The rings around the animal’s legs would have had what looked like Chinese characters on them.

Notable release in India. The police there have decided to release a pigeon that was suspected of being a ‘Chinese spy’. The animal was spotted at a port in Mumbai in May 2023. The rings around the animal’s legs are said to have contained ‘Chinese characters’. This made the police suspect that it was a form of Chinese espionage, so they were sent to a local veterinary clinic.

Not the first

Ultimately, the pigeon turned out not to be a spy, but a racing pigeon from Taiwan. The animal had escaped and flown to India. The bird was released on Tuesday with police permission. There will be a long road home for the racing pigeon.

It is not the first time that Indian police have arrested a suspected pigeon. In 2020, police released a pigeon from a Pakistani fisherman after investigations showed the bird, which crossed the heavily armed border between India and Pakistan, was not a spy. In 2016, another pigeon was taken into captivity. A note containing threats against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was found on this pigeon.
