After Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom, Romania is now also warning its people about a possible war. In an interview with the radio station ‘Radio Free Europe’, Romanian army chief Gheorghita Vlad said that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine will escalate in the near future. For that reason, Vlad wants to introduce “voluntary military service”. “We must take urgent measures,” the army boss said.

“The Russian Federation has become a problem for the world order, for democracy,” Vlad said in the interview with ‘Radio Free Europe’. According to the Romanian army chief, Russia is not only at war with Ukraine, but with “the entire democratic world”. Romania should therefore also be concerned about a possible conflict with Moscow, it is said. “We must urgently take the necessary measures.”

“If Putin wins in Ukraine, the main target after that will be Moldova,” Vlad said. “And we will also witness tensions in the Western Balkans,” he continued. The army chief said he strongly believes that “Putin’s policies will escalate in the near future.”

‘Voluntary military service’

According to Vlad, it seems certain that there will be an escalation. But at the same time, the army chief believes that his country is not prepared for such a conflict. Romania does not have sufficient combat systems and is unable to repel regular drone attacks, it said.

For this reason, according to the army chief, it is necessary to introduce “voluntary military service”. “That means we target citizens aged 18 to 35, regardless of gender, nationality, religion,” he said. “We need young people who want to put on the military uniform. We will train them on the basic principles of warfare and also pay them for their service.”

Vlad also called on other NATO countries to consider military service. In addition, the alliance members urgently need to increase their weapons stocks, the army boss said.

Mass mobilization

It is almost impossible to keep up with the ominous warnings of war. Last week, British army chief Patrick Sanders emphasized that the United Kingdom must prepare for a mass mobilization if war with Russia were to break out. Other countries, including Germany and Sweden, have also called on their people to prepare for a large-scale conflict.

Dutch NATO Admiral Rob Bauer recently predicted that turbulent times are likely to come. “You should have enough water, a flashlight and a battery-powered radio at home to survive the first 36 hours,” Bauer advised.
