Manchin has been asked in the past whether he would dare to set up a campaign as a candidate outside the Democratic or Republican party. He never wanted to commit to a yes. But not a no either.
Democrats now fear that Manchin will run for office with “No Labels”, a centrist political movement that strives for more unity in American politics. Joe Manchin has sympathy for No Labels and has already spoken at several of the organization’s events.
The central message of No Labels is almost exactly the same as the message Manchin sent to the world yesterday. “I know our country is not as divided as Washington would have us believe,” Manchin said in his video, “We share common values of family, freedom, democracy, dignity and the belief that together we can overcome any challenge. We must Take back control of America and don’t let hate drive us further apart.”
A statement of praise for the senator’s decision soon appeared on the No Labels website. It was immediately stated that they are investigating whether they should put forward a presidential candidate themselves and who would be the suitable candidate for this. The decision would be made at the beginning of 2024.
