A backpacker couldn’t believe his eyes when he felt “something” tickling his sleeping bag on Tuesday. The man had just visited Lake Clark National Park in Alaska when he crawled into his tent exhausted. “But I suddenly felt something in my sleeping bag and decided to take a look with the flashlight.”

The backpacker found hundreds of crane flies in and around his tent. On the national park’s Facebook page, officials provided more information about the presence of the insects. “Longlegs sometimes group together and form thick clusters called aggregations. This behavior is common in these long-legged animals, but there is no clear explanation for why they do this. Researchers speculate that they group together for mating, to control humidity or to deter predators. What scientists do know is that this behavior occurs more often in the fall, when the weather is dry and the days become short.”
