A 39-year-old resident of Genk has been sent to prison for twelve months because he knocked his wife unconscious. The 11-year-old son called the police. “He witnessed everything.”
On April 22, 2022, the 11-year-old boy called the police because he was afraid that his father was going to hurt his mother. According to the Tongeren prosecutor, the child witnessed heavy-handed violence between his parents, during which his mother briefly lost consciousness. The couple got into an argument over the woman’s deceased former husband. “The gentleman was interrogated and stated that he felt that his masculinity was being minimized. He felt humiliated and then started hitting her,” the prosecutor said.
The woman was taken to hospital with two black eyes, red welts and bruises. She was unable to work for twelve days due to her injuries. The man was given a temporary restraining order. “He does not understand the impact of his actions,” he said.
12 months in prison
The Tongeren judge sentenced the Genk resident on Tuesday morning to a prison sentence of 12 months and a fine of 800 euros. “Within a relationship, a woman should find affection, security and tenderness in her partner, instead of aggression and violence,” the verdict reads.
