A day after the hours-long hostage situation at Hamburg airport in Germany, new details about the background to the act have been released. The father of the four-year-old child no longer had custody, authorities reported today.
The 35-year-old Turkish citizen was sentenced in the spring to a fine of 3,600 euros for kidnapping a minor, said Kai Thomas Breas, spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office. The man had taken the girl to his home country in March 2022. The mother had filed a complaint, but then tried to resolve the matter in another way. The procedure was therefore stopped.
On September 2 last year, the mother filed another complaint. In July, the family court had stripped the father of parental authority and transferred custody to the mother alone. The woman picked up her daughter in Turkey on September 17 and brought her back to Germany.

Last Saturday, the 35-year-old man kidnapped the girl again from the woman’s home and fled in his car. According to witnesses, the woman tried to stop her armed ex-partner. She filed a report again. During the search of the man’s flat in Buxtehude, the police found evidence.
The man fled with his car to Hamburg airport, where he drove his car through the barriers of the tarmac. A stand-off with the police followed, during which the man also allegedly fired shots, and air traffic to and from Hamburg was suspended for more than 20 hours. After eighteen long hours, the suspect finally let the girl go on Sunday evening and surrendered himself to the police. No injuries were reported in the incident.
An arrest warrant has now been issued against the hostage taker because he allegedly gained access to his ex’s home to kidnap his four-year-old daughter with a rental car. He also allegedly threatened his ex with a semi-automatic weapon and shot into the air.
After the man was arrested, a homemade fake explosive device was found in addition to the firearm. It was a book wrapped in aluminum foil with wires inserted into it.
