According to the Ukrainian newspaper Pravda The victim’s name is Hennady Chastyakov (39) and he worked as an assistant for Valery Zaluzhny, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army. “Today, under tragic circumstances, on his birthday, my assistant and close friend, Major Hennady Chastyakov, died in the family circle,” Zaluzhny confirmed the death on Telegram. “An unknown explosive went off in one of the gifts.”

Chastyakov arrived home on Monday evening in the village of Chaiki, near Kiev. Police photos show the gift he came home with. Inside was a bottle of alcohol with special glasses in the shape of grenades. When the man opened the package, there was an explosion. He himself died, his 13-year-old son was admitted to hospital with serious injuries.

General Zaluzhny announced that the causes and circumstances were being investigated. According to the commander, Chastyakov’s death is “a heavy loss for the Ukrainian armed forces and for me personally.”

Since the start of the war in February last year, attacks on Ukrainian leaders have been quite rare. Several attacks have already been carried out against various Russian occupiers and pro-Russian fighters.
