Jasper Van Oudenhove (24) is doing well. Despite the competition, the Outer left midfielder is regarded as a certitude and scored his first goal from Sclessin. At Schiervelde, the physical education student treads familiar ground, as a former Club Brugge player.

After the six out of six against the RSCA Futures, Dender wants to repeat that against Club NXT. At the time, Van Oudenhove still wore the captain’s armband with the Bruges reserves and will undoubtedly meet quite a few familiar faces in Roeselare on Friday. “I played at Schiervelde for a year, which was already the home base of the Bruges reserves. I worked there under Sven Vermant and Rik De Mil. The team has since undergone a metamorphosis. I only played together with goalkeeper Shinton. It’s nice to settle down in Roeselare again. In the first leg I also chatted with old acquaintances, but our goal is clear. We’re going for a new three-pointer. We are at a 13 out of 18 against the U21 teams, which means we are doing better than the competition. Even now we try to use our surplus of experience to make a difference. We had a hard time against the technically adept RSCA Futures at times, but we countered that with other qualities and became boss after the break. We deserved to win the first leg against Club NXT.”

Coach Regi Van Acker frequently rotated the most recent matches, but that does not seem to harm the automatisms. “Everyone gets their chance and that keeps everyone on their toes,” says Van Oudenhove. “Everyone continues to fight to enforce a basic place. I feel good in the position of left center, where I fulfill my task defensively, but can also provide offensive impulses with my running ability as the greatest asset. It was nice to score a goal against SL16. Every win becomes important when you know that we are four teams on a handkerchief in the battle for sixth place. We opened the competition with a disappointing 1 in 15, but have taken serious steps forward since then. In the meantime, we have proven extensively that FCV Dender is worth the level of this series. If we were to make the play-offs, that would of course mean a huge windfall. Then we play ten toppers without any pressure. Then you are in a better starting position than in the playdowns, although we count nine points ahead of Virton and Jong Genk.”

Bachelors almost in

Van Oudenhove combines professional football in the Dender Football Complex with physical education studies in Ghent. “I just have to complete an internship and submit a final paper to get my bachelor’s degree. My thesis concerns motivation in football, for which I complete surveys. Quite interesting if you are in the world yourself. It is also quite convenient that I live in Outer, a short distance from our stadium. It is also quite handy for my parents and the family. They rarely miss home games. When I was still playing football at Bruges, it was more difficult.”
