The organization also refutes that it makes billions in profit from the agricultural sector instead of investing in an agricultural and horticultural sector of tomorrow. According to Boerenbond, the consolidated profit of MRBB, the financial holding behind Boerenbond, is only derived for a small part, 5.6 percent, from the services and products supplied to the agricultural and horticultural sector. MRBB has been investing multiple times the profit in the transition and further sustainability of the sector for years, according to the organization. “The holding company also pays an annual dividend to Boerenbond vzw, which uses it to finance its operations. A well-developed study service, an extensive network of consultants in the field, expert advice… it costs quite a bit of money. Only 11 percent of the cost is covered by the membership fee – the rest is paid from the dividend.”

The fact that Boerenbond takes positions that serve its own interests and not those of the farmers is also incorrect, according to the organization. “Boerenbond’s positions are taken by the central board, which consists of active farmers and horticulturists who have been mandated by their members through a democratic election process. They are selflessly committed to their colleagues.”

“Boerenbond, those are the members of farmers. As a Boerenbond, we speak on behalf of 16,000 professional farmers. That is two thirds of all Flemish farmers. It is our task to ensure that the voice of our farmers can be heard in the Wetstraat. As an agricultural and horticultural organization, it is our task to come to solutions and a future for our farmers through consultation,” said Boerenbond.
