The Chinese pear harvest is already over half way. This year the pear growers were not eager to grow pears, so the yield of many pear varieties decreased, which pushed up the price. In addition, shipping costs are gradually decreasing, which stimulates demand abroad.
Li Xixi, spokesman for Hebei Xionghan Agricultural Produce, recently spoke about the current conditions in the pear growing areas in Hebei.
Li Xixi spoke first about harvesting conditions. “Pear growers have given up and even cut down some of the pear trees this year, reducing the yield of pears from Hebei this season by 10%-15%. Several large export companies struggled to buy pears this year because the growers were hesitant to buy. while the price was still relatively low.
“Growers cut down pear trees because the purchase price was low last year, which made them lose confidence in pear cultivation. Moreover, harvesting and selling, or cutting trees, all require labor and there was a shortage of labour. Some growers left their pear trees. just stand,” said Li Xixi. “In April and May of 2022, the pear price started to rise. A few growers started working their abandoned orchards again and others stopped cutting their trees.”
“The harvests of some large pear varieties, such as the Imperial Crown pear, New Pear No. 7 and Fengshui pear, are already over. The late harvest of Autumn Moon pears is currently underway and the harvest of Ya pears is already over. half finished, Ya pear harvest is expected to be completed between September 20 and 25.
“This year, the acreage of Ya pears has decreased significantly. The purchase and retail price of these pears is usually lower than Imperial Crown pears, so some growers have replaced their Ya pears with other pear varieties, such as the Imperial Crown The number of abandoned or felled Ya pear trees far outweighed the number of Imperial Crown pear trees,” said Li Xixi.
“In addition, during the harvest season, the market demand was quite high, so that harvesting and selling took place at the same time and fewer pears entered the warehouses than in previous years. The price was high this season and shows no signs of decline. Regardless of the variety, Imperial Crown pears or Ya pears, prices have increased by 40 to 70% compared to last season.”
Conditions on the pear market are improving. “There are three reasons for this development. Firstly, the temperatures in the spring were quite low and there was a lot of rain, which delayed the harvest season by 5-10 days. The late harvest created a gap between the end of the previous sales season and the beginning of the new season, which stimulated demand.Second, international transport costs are slowly falling. The lower transport costs stimulate overseas demand.Third is the Mid-Autumn Festival [10 september 2022] a period in which the sale of fruit increases because people give each other fruit products as gifts. The sales volumes of Autumn Moon pears in gift boxes or Crispy pears have both increased.”
The pear export is stable at the moment and the market demand is more or less the same as last season. “Overseas customers were concerned about the high purchase price of pears at the beginning of the harvest season, but the drop in shipping costs has leveled the sales price of pears. The impact of the high purchase prices on exports is limited,” said Li Xixi. “The pear gift boxes are also very popular with overseas customers. Some of our overseas customers have already made plans for Christmas and New Year’s sales in the first half of the year.”
“The growing sales of apples and oranges will put pressure on the retail price of pears. The domestic fruit market has suffered from extreme weather this year. Lemons and honey pomelos are smaller this year and their supply is limited. The yield of Xinjiang Fragrant pears has decreased. Because hailstones have damaged the pears, therefore the fruit price is a little higher this year. However, the quality of the pears this year is good and Brix levels are high, so even if the price is high, domestic consumers will still buy pears. “
“I think only a profitable market can guarantee high product quality, stable yield and confidence in the pear sector. Low prices will discourage growers from growing pears or managing their pear trees to improve product quality. Under such conditions, no sustainable sector can The total area devoted to pear plantations is decreasing every year.We hope to help the growers to mechanize the pear planting, which can help to overcome the labor shortage and stimulate the healthy development of China’s pear industry, Li Xixi concludes.
