MADRID – According to figures from the European Statistical Office Eurostat prices for bread in all EU countries rose in August 2022. However, there are countries where the increase is many times higher than in other countries. An example is Hungary where bread prices have increased by 66%, while this is ‘only’ 8.2% in France. In Spain the price increase for ‘pan’ is 15.2%, which is more than the 13.7% in Belgium and the 9.6% in the Netherlands.

In August 2022, the bread price in the EU was on average 18% higher than in August 2021. This is a huge increase compared to August last year, when the bread price was on average 3% higher than in August 2020. However, some countries were much more affected. than others. The highest average change in bread prices was noted in Hungary (+66%), followed by Lithuania (+33%), Estonia and Slovakia (both +32%). The increase in Spain was +15.2% in August, while in Belgium it was +13.7% and in the Netherlands +9.6%.

The higher prices for bread are mainly due to the higher prices for wheat and flour, but also the energy prices that have risen as a result of the Ukraine war. Ukraine and Russia together account for 29% of world wheat production. Although exports from Ukraine have started slowly again, that has not yet resulted in lower bread prices.
