US: Bishops critical of Republican migration stunt

US bishops accuse some Republican governors of trying to boost their popularity with their migration policies. Most notorious was the forced transport of some 50 mostly Venezuelan migrants on two charter flights to the luxury island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. Victims from Texas were delivered to the doorstep of Vice President’s residence Kamala Harris. In the spring, Republican governors of Texas, Florida and Arizona also provided money for free, voluntary bus transfers of migrants to Washington and New York.

The most critical response comes from the Archbishop of San Antonio Gustavo Garcia-Siller. He spoke his disgust out about the fact that migrants are treated as if they were toys. This is an insult to God. Also bishop Daniel Flores van Brownsville labeled the actions of the Florida governor Ron DeSantis like a shame. He talked about a humiliating disrespect where the migrants become used as pawns in a political show fight. Archbishop Thomas Wenskic of Miami underlined that migration is not just a political issue. It is also a fundamental moral and human issue.
