AntwerpThe landing of a truck was partly pushed onto the street in the Nieuw Zuid district on Tuesday morning. It concerned a crane column of a crane that was broken. The accident would have caused minor damage.

The accident happened during the morning near the Jos Smolderenstraat. The construction company Democo worked there on the building of the Zuidzin primary school, which collapsed last year. A crane was broken. A subcontractor truck transported part of the crane column. While driving, it has partly shifted from the trailer. Passer-by Rudi Theuns saw it happen. “Part of the crane column ended up on three bicycles from Velo Antwerp. When I passed, they were setting up the tow truck again to put everything back in order. It was probably the last part and the crane truck was therefore immediately available,” he says.

Thomas Bijnens, marketing director of Democo, confirms that a minor accident has happened. “I understand that one of the couplings between the trailer and the vehicle has come loose,” he explains. “That happened when the driver pulled onto the road. He had to get out, put the clutch back in the right place and then he could leave again. In addition to the coupling, there were chains that ensured that the trailer did not come off completely. As far as I know there was no damage.”
