Zelensky addresses UN and sets out formula for peace

“Ukraine wants peace. Europe wants peace. The world wants peace. And we’ve seen who’s the only one who wants war. There is only one entity among all UN member states who would now say, if he could interrupt my speech, that he is happy with this war, with his war,” Zelensky told the United Nations in his signature khaki T-shirt. During his speech, Zelensky laid out his “formula” for achieving peace in Ukraine. That formula consists of five points, including the punishment of Russia through sanctions and the removal of the veto right in the UN Security Council. According to the Ukrainian president, the aggressor should no longer be part of the decision-making process in international organizations. He also asks for a special court that can punish Russian crimes and he wants a fund to be able to repair all the damage suffered.

He called for the “punishment of the crime of aggression, and punishment of the violation of borders and territorial integrity. Penalties to remain in effect until internationally recognized borders are restored.”

He added: “What’s NOT in our formula? Neutrality. Whoever speaks of neutrality, when human values and peace are attacked, means something else.”

Moscow shows no real willingness to have peace talks, Zelensky also notes. “They are talking about talks, but they are declaring military mobilization,” it said. “They talk about talks, but announce mock referendums.” Parts of Ukrainian territory under Russian control, such as Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya, announced on Tuesday that the population will be able to vote on those areas’ accession to Russia later this week.

The Ukrainian president also warned of an international nuclear disaster, due to the situation in and around the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.

Zelensky ruled out “that the settlement can take place on a basis other than the Ukrainian peace formula. The further Russian terror reaches, the less likely it is that anyone in the world will agree to sit at one table with them.”
