The Belgian Cats lost their first game at the Women’s Basketball World Cup in Sydney, Australia. Against top favorite United States it was 87-72, halfway it was 48-39.

Certainly in the first period, the Cats came out nicely against the reigning world champion and Olympic champion, but the Belgian players had to let their opponents slip in the second half. Julie Allemand finished with 10 points (4 assists), Emma Meesseman with 4 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds. On the American side, Breanna Stewart, the best player in the world, was good for 22 points. In the other game of Group A, Puerto Rico managed to surprise Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The latter country was the big surprise at the latest European championship. The second group match against South Korea will follow on Friday (at 5 a.m. Belgian time). Afterwards, the Cats will play in the group stage against Puerto Rico on Sunday (at 12:30 pm), Tuesday (at 3:30 am) against Bosnia and Wednesday (at 5:30 am) against China. The Cats are in a group with, in addition to the unapproachable America, also South Korea, Puerto Rico, Bosnia and China. The top 4 in the group advance to the quarter-finals. The goal is to reach at least the second round.

The Belgian women were surprisingly fourth at their first World Cup four years ago. Subsequent winner USA eliminated Belgium in the semifinals. At the time, Emma Meesseman and co were an absolute outsider. Expectations are higher for this World Cup.
