What time iOS 16 download?

Last Wednesday, Apple presented the iPhone 14 series and the company also announced the date of the iOS 16 release: Monday, September 12. At the time of writing, the update is not yet available for download, but it won’t be long.

Usually, Apple rolls out a major iOS update at 7:00 PM Dutch time. You won’t get a notification yet, but you can install the update by going to the Settings app:

  1. Open the Settings app;
  2. Tap on ‘General>Software Update’;
  3. Press ‘Download and Install’.

If you only see a notification that iOS is up to date, then iOS 16 has not yet been rolled out. Try the above steps again at a later time. We expect you to see the update within a few minutes after 7:00 PM.

4 functions to try right away

iOS 16 is a nicer and bigger update than iOS 15 from last year. You’ll want to try these features right away tonight:

1. Change iPhone lock screen

With iOS 16, the lock screen is getting a big overhaul. This is the screen you see before you unlock your iPhone. What’s new is that you can place widgets on it, such as those from the Calendar and Weather apps. You can also customize the appearance of the date and time.

2. Return the battery percentage

It’s a minor tweak, but iPhone users have been asking for it for years: the return of the battery percentage in the status bar. With iOS 16 you will see the percentage at the top of the screen again, although you still have to turn the option on. You do this by going to ‘Settings>Battery’.

Strangely enough, the option to show the battery percentage is not available on all iPhones. The option cannot be activated with the iPhone XR, 6.1-inch iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini.

3. Detach a photo from the background

Detaching a subject from the photo normally takes some Photoshop skills. With iOS 16, your iPhone’s software gets the job done, because all you have to do is put your finger on the photo.

Curious about how it works, and what you can do with it? Check out the following article:

4. Customize your notifications

With iOS 16, notifications from your iPhone come in from the bottom of the screen, instead of from above. You can also customize how notifications are displayed. You do this at ‘Settings>Notifications’.

You can choose from ‘Quantity’, ‘Stack’ and ‘List’. The first is the most subtle. You only see how many notifications you have received; not which. With ‘Stack’ all notifications are lumped together. Tapping on them expands them and reveals more. With ‘List’ all notifications are shown below each other.
