The Vuelta belongs to Remco Evenepoel! Red jersey never gets into trouble in the last mountain stage and wins the Tour of Spain tomorrow without accident | Instagram HLN

VueltaRemco Evenepoel wins the Vuelta tomorrow without any accidents. Our compatriot was never embarrassed in the last mountain stage. Competitor Enric Mas got no further than a modest attack, which Evenepoel answered easily. The stage win in Puerto de Navacerrada went to mountain king Richard Carapaz.

Five difficult cols and a tough Spaniard in the form of Enric Mas: only they stood between Remco Evenepoel (22) and the final victory in the Vuelta 2022. Belgian cycling was preparing for a stage for history, but the first competition hours were not in the cards. the sign of the battle for the red jersey.

It’s all about the fight for the polka dot jersey. In a nervous opening phase, Rob Stannard had slipped away. Richard Carapaz had been surprised and pulled out all the stops to defend his jersey. The Ecuadorian got a lot of others with him, left Stannard in the delusion and sneaked forward at the right time.

Race from the book of Carapaz, who secured his polka dot jersey on the Puerto de Morcuera. The penultimate of five slopes had to be the breaking point in the ride. Mas had two pawns in the front, a Movistar offensive was written in the stars. Evenepoel had Van Wilder and Vervaeke with him, but was suddenly isolated for a while.

It was the signal for Mas to attack, but his attempt on the Morcuera was not to fall from the back. Evenepoel answered with apparent ease and looked his direct competitor in the eye. Much more than a few pinpricks were not handed out for the final climb.

Even then, things looked good for Evenepoel and his red dream. Just before the Puerto de Cotos, Van Wilder and Vervaeke came back. Mas had understood and stopped attacking. In the meantime, the game was playing for the places of honor, Evenepoel always let himself be carried away and was never embarrassed.

Meanwhile, Carapaz tried to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. The Ecuadorian was the first to get on top of the final climb and continued. For a while it looked as if the favorites would set up, but in vain. Hat-trick for Carapaz, Evenepoel liked to see it happen and limited himself to the wheel of Mas.

Our compatriot came in emotionally as 6th. The first Belgian overall victory in a Grand Tour since 1978 is a fact tomorrow in Madrid. Schepdaal can join the party. Or to put it in words from a now infamous video by Johan Museeuw: “Did Rempo Evekoel, did he fall through the ice? No!”
