the ‘Accession Council‘ is a ceremonial organ that convenes at St. James’s Palace after the death of a monarch. At the meeting, the Queen’s death will be announced, followed by a declaration honoring the previous monarch and supporting the new king. Charles, in turn, will make a statement, and take the oath. That proclamation is then signed by, among others, the Prime Minister and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

After a fanfare and cannon shots from Hyde Park and the Tower of London then at 12 noon follows a public proclamation in which Charles is officially announced as king by an official, the so-called ‘Garter King of Arms‘, from a balcony above Friary Court in St. James’ Palace. A second official proclamation will follow at 1 pm, this time from the Royal Exchange.
