If smoking is also banned on train platforms next year, the NMBS must be consistent and “also prohibit the sale of tobacco and cigarettes in its stations”. That is what the left-wing party PVDA says.
Today you are no longer allowed to smoke in the station buildings and on the trains. Next year, people waiting on the platform for their train – even if that platform is in the open air – will no longer be allowed to light a cigarette there, it was decided in April.
“However, the NMBS will continue to facilitate the sale of tobacco products, unlike the Dutch Railways,” said MP Maria Vindevoghel (PVDA). For several years now, the Dutch Railways no longer rents out retail space to companies that want to sell tobacco products at their stations.
According to figures from mobility minister Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo), tobacco and cigarettes are now for sale in almost 40 Belgian train stations. He does not like a sales ban, given the fact that selling tobacco in our country is currently a permitted economic activity. (work)
