ARNHEM – A woman from Millingen aan de Rijn is suspected of having threatened Nijmegen mayor Hubert Bruls. She also had to answer for the court in Arnhem on Tuesday for threatening eight other people, including officials and staff members of her son’s school. She emailed them pictures of guns and threatened them with death. She emailed, among other things: “Dirty rats, your end is in sight. Bruls, you will be shot in the heart. Are you dead in one go, just like Pim Fortuyn.”
The 42-year-old woman was sentenced to 47 days in prison for these and other death threats. Exactly the number of days she’s been in custody. Also, if it is up to the public prosecutor, she may not contact the persons threatened by her for 5 years. If she does, she will have to go back to jail.
“This is unacceptable behavior towards people who work for us,” the officer said. “We see this kind of tyranny far too often. It should be crystal clear that suspects of this kind of behavior are prosecuted and punished.”
Major impact on victims of threatening emails
The prosecutor said the emails had a major impact on those threatened in them. “Madam has made nine victims with a few keystrokes. Her words have caused fear in these people. ‘We are no longer walking the streets carefree,’ they say.”
A school closed its doors after a threatening email. For fear that the suspect would stand on the doorstep and the employees or children would be harmed. “Perhaps that was not the intention of the lady at all, but that fear was there.”
Only I will be dragged to court
The woman said on Tuesday that she regrets it. She sent the threatening emails out of frustration, she told the judge. “They got me in trouble with a lot of injustice and only I am being taken to court.” The woman is now in a mental health institution in Wolfheze.
The public prosecutor spoke of a sad story: “A sad story of a woman who experiences injustice, has psychological problems and is actually nowhere in the right place. Madame has lost a child. Another has been removed from home and I think that has made that she bombards the municipality and everyone involved with these kinds of e-mails. She has lost confidence in everything and everyone and all authorities, I can tell. Her impotence is expressed in this way.”
The court will rule in two weeks.
