Who is Remco Evenepoel, did our man in Spain open the conversation? “Remco Evenepoel is our son, of whom we have always been proud”, says Agna Van Eeckhout. “He’s a fun, active guy. But after his fall, which had a huge impact on him, he has completely changed.”

“This may be very strange what I am going to say now, but for his future it is the other side of the coin that he has seen. It is a help in what he is currently going through.”

August 15, 2020 was a pitch-black day for the Evenepoel family. The top favorite for the Tour of Lombardy fell in a descent, when he hit a wall and plunged into the ravine. Fortunately, the 22-year-old Quick-Stepper escaped with a fracture in his pelvis.

“August 15 was our lucky day”, says papa Patrick. “He survived, he is still among us. While other people have lost their child. We put that into perspective, but so does he. That is why he has changed so much.”

“He will no longer react hot-tempered,” adds mom Evenepoel. “He can look at it much calmer and is going to make us much calmer. Every once in a while you learn from your kids, I have to admit.”
