Peter and Aster about CL group Club Brugge: “Home match against Leverkusen immediately must win game” | Champions League

Club Brugge has been dreaming of spending the winter in the Champions League for a few years now. Last season that was almost impossible in a group with Manchester City, PSG and Leipzig.

“Now they have a little more future prospects with Leverkusen, Porto and Atletico Madrid,” says Aster Nzeyimana in the CL podcast of De Tribune. “But it turns out that it is a small percentage that they push through.”

“I don’t want to discourage the Club supporters right away,” adds Peter Vandenbempt. “But I looked at the CL entries of Porto, Atletico and Leverkusen: the number of times they were eliminated – and thus finished 4th – in the past 10 years is 3.”

“For example, it is said of Leverkusen: that is of the level of Club Brugge. I would be very careful with that! After all, Leverkusen has never been eliminated. Of the last 9 times in the Champions League, 7 times went to the 2nd round, the the other 2 times they moved on to the Europa League.”

“Porto is also a habitué of the 1/8th final, sometimes even quarter-final, of the Champions League. They always sell their best players, but there are always new toppers.”

“Atletico may not be the Atletico of a few years ago, but there is still a difference between pushing through in the Champions League and reaching enough level to beat Club Brugge.”

Peter Vandenbempt: “It is such a group of which the somewhat naive Belgian football observer says: feasible. After all, the good municipality does not know who Taremi or Evanilson is. But Porto is a club that buys a defender for 20 million.”

“Feasible is by the way the most used word after a draw – even if Club did not mention it themselves. As the matches progress, it becomes ‘feasible’ than ‘slightly less feasible’. After that it is only ‘mathematically it is still possible’. ‘ and finally it has become ‘impossible’.”

“Clubs like Manchester City or PSG might come up here and say, ‘What’s that here? Bruges? Pfff!” They play unconcentrated and you can catch them or get a draw. But with someone like Conceiçao (coach of Porto) that will not happen and Simeone (coach Atletico) would rather die.”

“The home game against Leverkusen is immediately a must win game“I think it’s a good thing that they start against them right away,” says Aster Nzeyimana. “In Leverkusen’s current form, you now want to play against them as soon as possible.”

Vandenbempt: “What Elverenberg can do (the third division team that eliminated Leverkusen in the cup, ed.) Club Brugge should also be able to do? Although Leverkusen will be a bit sharper now than then.”

“I think it will be very difficult for Club Brugge again, even to reach the Europa League.” “I agree”, Aster Nzeyimana agrees. “But the success rate is a bit higher than last year.”
