In the quarterfinals, 24-year-old Tiafoe will face the Russian Andrey Rublev (ATP 11). With three times 6-4, he was too strong for the British Cameron Norrie (ATP 9).

It is the first time that the American has reached the quarterfinals at a grand slam tournament. In the past two years, he was eliminated in the eighth finals at the US Open. “I don’t know what to say. I played incredible tennis, I don’t know what happened,” Tiafoe said in a first reaction. “It’s like the world has stopped spinning. Now I can tell my grandchildren later that I beat Rafa.”

The 36-year-old Nadal is stuck with 22 Grand Slam titles due to the defeat, with which he is still the only record holder. Earlier this season, he won the Australian Open and Roland Garros. At Wimbledon, he forfeited his semifinal against Nick Kyrgios.

“I played a bad game today and he did well. That made the difference today,” said Nadal. “I couldn’t maintain a high level and was too slow in my movements. He was able to take the ball too early too many times, so I couldn’t push him back on the court. If I want to get to the quarter-finals, it has to be better. I have to recognize that he was stronger today.”
