On the opening day of the tournament in L’Aquila, Italy, it appeared that Suttels was unable to compete in the points elimination race after an increase in pace. As a result, the first gold came into trusted hands, that of Swings. On Monday, Suttels came along well. Swings defended Suttels’ lead as the French skaters launched an attack. In the final lap, the Swiss Livio Wenger rode to bronze, just like on the first day.

In many ways, Swings ten years older is the teacher of 21-year-old Suttels. They train a lot together. As a junior, Suttels had already built up a nice honors list, but the seniors lacked convincing results. At the previous European Championship, in Portugal, his harvest was limited to a silver medal. He then took a wrong turn in the marathon.
On the elimination races there were top ten placings for Fran Vanhoutte (seventh) and junior Jorun Geerts (fifth). That also applied to Anke Vos in the 500 meters (seventh). A medal turned out to be too ambitious for the three of them.
