A 36-year-old citizen of Oostkamp faces a five-year prison sentence for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend. Bart K. fired a pistol at the victim’s home in Zedelgem, but denies that he wanted to hit her.

Armed with a gun and a knife, Bart K. went to the victim’s home on April 5, 2020, with whom he had had an on-again-off-again relationship for two years. The woman found him crying on the doorstep and talked to him. But when the woman’s new boyfriend came out, the mood changed. K. sent the man in and ominously loaded his pistol. “It’s not going to work out that way,” he said.

The Oostkampenaar fired a bullet into the facade of the Zedelgem house. According to the prosecutor’s office, K. aimed at his ex-partner. “This could have ended much worse,” said attorney Yves Segaert-Vanden Bussche, who labeled the facts as an attempted murder.

K., who was in pre-trial detention for a short time after the shooting, however strongly denies that he wanted to kill his ex. “These were threats”, pleaded his lawyer Jorn Verminck. “My client had those weapons with him as a deterrent. He wanted to reinforce his words with that shot. He denies shooting in her direction and is used to handling guns. He was a member of a shooting club.”

According to Verminck, K. went through a difficult period after the death of his father. “He was also wrongly imprisoned for six months on suspicion of arson,” he continued. “My client is now adhering to the no-contact order and will never use a firearm again. Hopefully a suspended sentence will suffice.”

Bart K. got the last word. “I made a big mistake,” he said. “But now I’m in therapy.” The judge will rule on October 3. (AFr)
