Thymen Arensman records the most beautiful career victory with a nice stage win in the queen stage Vuelta | Vuelta Ciclista a Espana

Thymen Arensman has won the queen stage in the Vuelta a España. The 22-year-old DSM rider was part of a large leading group and was the only one to stay ahead of the classification men on the very tough final climb to Sierra Nevada. It is for Arensman his first victory in a big round.

The queen stage started extremely disappointing for another Dutchman, namely Wilco Kelderman. He fell early in the ride and had to chase after. Fortunately for him, he was able to continue on his way, albeit battered. For Domenico Pozzovivo, the Vuelta was over at the same time after a fall.

In the meantime, a large leading group had ridden away with two Dutchmen: Sam Oomen (teammate of Primoz Roglic) and Arensman, in eleventh place the best placed rider in the leading group of 29. Also recognized classification men such as Jai Hindley (13th), Louis Meintjes ( 14th), David de la Cruz (16th), Richard Carapaz (17th) and Rigoberto Uran (18th) moved along for a shot at stage win or to jump in the standings. The large group almost got a lead of seven minutes, but then Ben O’Connor’s team thought it was enough: AG2R-Citroën settled in to defend the Australian’s tenth place. The lead dwindled.

Jumbo-Visma sets the pace

Jay Vine took the plunge on the penultimate climb to lone attacker Lawson Craddock, who was leading the pack for a long time. Vine collected ten mountain points and did a business in the mountains classification, just as Mads Pedersen took seventeen points in the intermediate sprint just before that and again did good business in the points classification. In the peloton nothing happened on the penultimate climb Alto del Purche of the first category.

Jumbo-Visma took matters into their own hands at the foot of the 22.3 kilometer climb. Each and every one of the riders of the Dutch formation ensured that little of the favorites group remained. Only the very best classification men could follow. It was Miguel Angel Lopez and Enric Mas who accelerated as the first favorites. Evenepoel and Roglic had no answer and had to give chase. For a long time, Lopez and Mas’ lead fluctuated around thirty seconds.

Attack of Arensman

Meanwhile, Arensman hunted the lone Soler, who had driven away at the bottom of the climb. Arensman had closed the gap in no time and was allowed to dream aloud of his very first stage win in a Grand Tour. One by one, the pursuers were caught, except for Arensman. After 4 hours and 17 minutes he was allowed to raise his hands. In addition, he makes a big jump in the standings and dives into the top ten.

Primoz Roglic took fifteen seconds in the last kilometer on Remco Evenepoel, who crossed the line in tenth place at 1.59 minutes behind Arensman. Miguel Angel Lopez and Enric Mas finished before that and did even better business than Roglic.
