In the Hoeksche Waard, the flags are flown at half mast out of sympathy and as a statement of support to the relatives. After the truck drama in the hamlet of Nieuw-Beijerland, the municipality announced a week of mourning, with all events cancelled.

The grist mills in mourning stand are an impressive sight. The island dwells on the unprecedented drama, but over time, life will resume its normal course. That moment will inevitably come.

Because it is important that people meet each other, chat, laugh together, share sorrow and love.

Know who your neighbors are

Precisely for that reason, the annual barbecue was held in the Zuidzijde. New residents were explicitly invited to this party – because of corona it had not happened in recent years. And that was felt, because you better know who your neighbors are. Handy for a cup of sugar, borrowing a drill, a jammed iPad, a chat, taking care of the plants during holidays or keeping an eye on things in case of danger. How cruel can fate be.
