Remco Evenepoel appears confidently at the start after offday: “Yesterday I was tired, my legs feel fresher today”

A day after his dip on the Sierra de La Pendera, Remco Evenepoel explains his bad day. “Yesterday I was tired and had stiff legs.” Today, with a stage that finishes in the Sierra Nevada, there may be an even more difficult stage on the menu. But Evenepoel is not deterred by that either. “We have to keep fighting.”

“Today I just have to rely on my own strength and not lose any time”, Evenepoel appeared at the start again full of courage. The center of gravity of the stage is at the end, with the ascent of the Alto Hoya de la Mora, the only out-of-class climb in this Vuelta. “It could well be that Jumbo-Visma is already attacking on the climb before that. It is very steep, then it goes down and then it is very steep again, after which it flattens out.”

Of that final climb, the first four kilometers are indeed very difficult. “It will mainly depend on it and do nothing yourself,” says the Schepdalenaar. “So don’t waste unnecessary energy and be patient on the second part of the final climb. The legs feel a lot fresher than yesterday, when I was tired and I suffered from stiff legs.”

Evenepoel also had an eye for the positive side of the story. “The good news today is that I still have a lead of 1’50”. It will be warm anyway and everyone suffered yesterday. We’ll see what it becomes. We have to keep fighting and believe in ourselves.”
