Max Verstappen took pole position this afternoon during qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix and that is not something team boss Christian Horner had expected. The Red Bull CEO says he was blown away by his driver. “Insane!”, says Horner afterwards.

Verstappen started qualifying very strong, but in Q3 there was suddenly Charles Leclerc, who managed to drive two very fast laps. For the first time today, Verstappen had to chase. And with success, because in his last run he squeezed out a 1:10.342, a few thousandths faster than his Ferrari rival. Horner was surprised by Verstappen’s lap. “An amazing round!”, he says in front of viaplay. “Max was put under enormous pressure by Leclerc, because of the lap Charles set.” Horner did not expect Verstappen to succeed.

Verstappen “very impressive” according to Horner

“His lap was very impressive,” the British Red Bull team boss continues his story. “By the smallest margin of the year I think. We are in good shape.” In addition, Red Bull will have an extra trump card compared to Ferrari tomorrow in the race with Verstappen. “We also saved a set of tires,” Horner confirms. “We have secured the best position today and tomorrow we need to consolidate that.”

Verstappen will therefore start from pole position tomorrow and has a tire advantage, but he certainly cannot take it easy. Leclerc was only 0.021 second behind Verstappen and Sainz also stayed close. In addition, Mercedes also seems to be doing very well at Circuit Zandvoort. So it could just be a battle between the traditional top three tomorrow.
