The crisis has been averted, the red lantern has been handed over. After four defeats in as many duels, the ambitious Helmond Sport finally booked its first victory of the season in the Kitchen Champion Division on Friday evening, against Almere City FC with no less than 3-0.

Martijn Kaars set De Braak ablaze with two hits, but Eros Maddy was really the man who set the match on fire. The attacker, who came over from FC Utrecht, brought enormous energy and speed to his first base place since Young AZ home in round 2. Nobody cared that his accuracy sometimes left something to be desired.

His cross after twelve minutes was worth gold. After a pass from Bryan van Hove, Maddy – who played instead of midfielder Arno van Keilegom – let striker Kaars (via an Almere leg) score. After half an hour, he himself got the chance to make it 2-0, were it not for the fact that the ball got stuck on the viscous artificial grass under his foot.

That miss didn’t bother Helmond Sport in the end. The team of Sven Swinnen had little to fear from Almere City FC, which had already lost the previous two matches. Yes, some free kicks the home side gave away. The only time goalkeeper Mike Havekotte had to dive for the break was with a long shot by Tim Receveur: a simple prey. A volley from right back Hamdi Akujobi sailed past.

Defensively strong

Even after the break, the Helmond Sport defense led by the once again flourishing Flor van den Eynden, Tom Beugelsdijk and Robin van der Meer simply remained upright. And that while Jeremy Hilterman and Anthony Limbombe came in at Almere City.

Helmond Sport then struck in the counter. Hakon Lorentzen took advantage at the start of the second half, after a remarkable return pass from Akujobi. After which Kaars ended the game with a header. That goal was the perfect opportunity for Swinnen to give Michael Chacon his debut. The midfielder came over from Excelsior on deadline day on Wednesday and immediately made an impression for Helmond Sport in his first minutes.

With the win, Helmond Sport not only skipped over Jong FC Utrecht, the next opponent, but also FC Den Bosch and ADO Den Haag. This is how the advance towards the play-off spots has started.

Helmond Sport line-up: Havekotte; Van Vlerken, Van den Eynden, Beugelsdijk, Van der Meer, Van Hove (84. Terzi); Lieftink (84. Lion), Lorentzen (71. Chacon), Van Ooijen; Maddy (71. Goselink), Candle (90+2 Van Keilegom).
