FC Utrecht has won its first victory of the season. In Sittard, Fortuna won 3-4, although the club will have a nasty aftertaste from the game. The game was stopped due to misbehavior of its own fans. Once because of the Utrecht fans throwing fireworks, a second time after throwing beer cups on the Fortuna side.
A match that was stopped twice due to the throwing of fireworks and plastic beer cups, an exaggerated penalty and seven goals respectively; Fortuna Sittard – FC Utrecht was anything but boring on Friday evening. The deserved winner, albeit a little lucky? The team of Henk Fraser, who therefore leaves the lower regions.
The cheering of substitute Anastasios Douvikas betrayed the relief, immediately afterwards. With three hits, he had played a large part in FC Utrecht’s victory against Fortuna Sittard. And he wanted to share that relief, right in front of the box with accompanying supporters. Mainly thanks to him, his club, which started so weakly, has some air again. And yet it was an evening with a black edge for the Domstedelingen. Just like during the meeting with Ajax, the club’s supporters caused nuisance by throwing fireworks. The penalties will probably pile up for the club management. On the other hand, the Limburg fans were not indifferent either. They also threw projectiles on Friday, in their case plastic beer glasses.
It happened in a second half, which was nothing short of exciting. Bas Dost opened the score after a beautiful pass from Jens Toornstra, after which the completely uncovered Rodrigo Guth equalized from a corner from Mats Seuntjens. After the chaotic leading referee Allard Lindhout saw a penalty in an action by Mickael Tirpan on Othmane Boussaid, the Greek knew what to do with that opportunity. After Burak Yilmaz’s 3-2 from a justified penalty, Douvikas signed for his third goal moments later, 2-4. Noslin made 3-4 deep into injury time, but that was it.
That both teams certainly did not shine with self-confidence, especially in the first half. Loss of ball, sent balls that ended in no man’s land; uncertainty was the trump card during Fortuna Sittard – FC Utrecht. Nevertheless, the scoreless phase before the break could have been framed with goals. That would have been the case if the disappointing Moussa Sylla had been more careful with Dost’s clever pass, who in turn might have been entitled to a penalty after being detained. Just as Toornstra and Othmane Boussaid also caused a threat twice. Shortly before the break, Seuntjens and Yilmaz successively countered that on behalf of Fortuna Sittard. Both attempts were prey for the excellent goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas of FC Utrecht.
After the break, the game turned into a high-profile encounter. With Douvikas as the undisputed star. He is the first FC Utrecht substitute since Karel Bonsink in 1972 to score three goals.
‘This really shouldn’t happen’
“A lot happened, huh? It is always a small group that ruins it for the crowd, that is such a shame,” says captain Nick Viergever about the conscious moments. “It just shouldn’t happen. Let’s take good measures. Football is a fun sport that you should go to with family, friends and children. This really shouldn’t happen,” he told ESPN. “These are not nice things, it makes no sense at all. Also throwing beer, why do you do that? It has to go in society anyway.”
