To ensure the EU is addressing Europeans’ top concerns, MEPs will review the work of the European Commission on 14 September. Follow the SOTEU debate live.

What is the debate on the State of the European Union?

Every September, the President of the European Commission comes to the European Parliament to discuss with MEPs what the Commission has done in the past year, what the plans are for the coming year and what its vision is for the future. This is known as the State of the European Union Debate, or SOTEU.
After the presentation by the President of the Commission, MEPs, as the elected representatives of EU citizens, hold the Commission accountable and monitor its work to ensure that the key issues of Europeans are addressed. The SOTEU debate influences the Commission work program for the coming year.

Why is the debate on the State of the EU in 2022 important?

The EU’s response to Russia’s war in Ukraine, climate change, EU action to tackle the rising cost of living, the energy crisis and the rule of law are among the most pressing issues facing the bloc.

The priorities presented by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the State of the European Union debate last year are still relevant, including efforts to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, its consequences, and digital transformation.

Parliament expects the EU, in line with citizens’ proposals for changes in the EU endorsed by the Conference on the Future of Europe, to listen to citizens’ demands and respond with ambitious policies, especially in times of crisis.
How can I follow the SOTEU debate?

The debate will be broadcast live on this website on Wednesday 14 September from 9:00 am. Interpretation will be available in all 24 official EU languages - you can choose the language yourself.
