La Vuelta | Profile and route stage 14 – from Cordoba to Jaen, first of a tough diptych

Our live blog of the Vuelta a España really goes wild as soon as there is live image. Most broadcasts start at 2:30 PM. Of course, even before the start of the live registration, our focus is on the course. Several stages are even broadcast from start to finish. Are you watching? Last 15 kilometers

Bou still has a nice pocket money left over from the attack of the day. The Bask was the first to pass the intermediate sprint with just under 15 kilometers from the finish.

It was the last convulsion of the three escapees, because the chasing peloton had approached them within ten seconds. Tension will gradually rise in the sprint teams. Will Pedersen, Van Poppel or perhaps Alejandro Valverde take a first victory of this Vuelta?

Kelderman: “Second maximum attainable”

While the price seems to have fallen into a fold for the time being, we can also look back at yesterday. The second place in that twelfth stage was, in his own words, the maximum achievable for Wilco Kelderman and with that he again just missed a stage victory.

The Dutchman did make a nice jump in the standings, but he lets it depend on the form of the day whether he will try to protect it in the mountains. Today the stage for BORA-hansgrohe is all about Van Poppel: “Danny is fine.”

Danny van Poppel is looking forward to it

We already wrote that Danny van Poppel has proven this Vuelta that his form is good and that promises something for today’s finish, which should suit him. The Dutchman from BORA-hansgrohe is therefore looking forward to this stage with uncharacteristic confidence. “I really think I can win and I don’t say that often.

Van Poppel knows who to keep an eye on. In his eyes, Mads Pedersen is the big favorite and so he has looked back old images of the Dane on YouTube. “I know what to expect from him.”

Ayuso happy that he can continue

The news of the day was Juan Ayuso’s positive test and the decision of the organization and his team UAE Emirates to let it go ahead. The young Spaniard currently occupies fifth place and therefore has a chance of a nice final classification.

La Vuelta | “Feel much better than few days ago” – Ayuso happy to continue

I felt bad after the time trial and if I would have tested positive then I might have stopped, but I feel good now, I am not bothered by anything and so I am happy that I can continue.”

Van den Berg in flight

Julius van den Berg (EF-Education) has managed to secure a place in the race of the day. Together with the Spaniards Ander Okamika (Burgos BH) and Joan Bou (Euskatel-Euskadi), the former wearer of the mountain jersey chose the fast track early on.

It remains to be seen how much chance the trio has. Behind them, several sprint teams (BikeExchange, Trek-Segafredo and Cofidis) have put a man in front to control the margin, so a bunch sprint seems in the making, just as Mads Pedersen predicted.

Pedersen full of confidence

Earlier he was already convinced of a sprint and then he was wrong, but today Mads Pedersen expects that the fast men can decide among themselves who can take off with the flowers at the end of the day.

La Vuelta | After wrong last time – ‘turtle’ Pedersen predicts another sprint

If it indeed turns out to be a sprint, the Dane has a good chance. The final is still cunningly going up and that is right up the road of the Trek-Segafredo rider. He then sounds determined: “We must not let this opportunity slip!”

Background

The lovers of cycling pools have a tough job on Friday: who do you put on and who do you put on the couch? The choice is huge and the looks are deceiving! The organization has mapped out a nice ride of 168.4 kilometers between Ronda and Montilla that officially falls into the ‘flat’ category, but in Spain nothing is flat…

And certainly not during the Vuelta. Also on Friday, quite a few altimeters have to be bridged, not least towards the finish in Montilla. So it is really not just said that it turns out to be a sprint. Even if there is a sprint, not all contenders are likely to be present.

Coquard for the last time

When there is a sprint, the eyes from the Netherlands are on Danny van Poppel. The BORA rider fell just a little short in Cabo de Gata and finished second, but he clearly has the speed in his legs. At the next opportunity, the puzzle pieces just have to fit right…

Other candidates are Kaden Groves and Fred Wright, while Mads Pedersen, as a sprinter with substance, has the big advantage of his versatility. Will he stick with it? For Bryan Coquard it is probably the last chance for daily success in this Vuelta. The quick man from Cofidis will go home tonight to collect UCI points elsewhere…
