Bryan Coquard of Cofidis will leave the Vuelta a España after today to earn points for the UCI Team Ranking in other races. That is what his teammate Davide Cimolai says to the Italian Bici.PRO. “The points system is a disgrace,” Cimolai reacts fiercely.

“Friday, Coquard will go home to participate in other competitions,” said the Italian. “We have to score points, but I think it’s ridiculous. It causes a lot of stress all year round. The paradox of the situation is that much more points can be earned in small matches.”

“Last year, for example, with a third place in a stage in the Tirreno and two second places in stages in the Giro d’Italia, I took around 100 points, while other riders took 125 points by winning one small race.”

Despite his personal opinion, Cimolai will have to adapt to the situation. “I’m not happy about it, but I understand the team. The goal is to stay in the WorldTour, and even if we stay calm it will be a challenge. I didn’t expect the year to go like this, but I’m keeping my mouth shut and doing my job,” said the sprinter.

Cofidis is still safe
With Coquard’s imminent retirement, Cimolai’s goal is now to win the final stage in Madrid. “It is my only personal goal this Vuelta. However, it will mainly provide personal satisfaction, because many points are not to be achieved”, concludes the 33-year-old rider.

At the moment, Cofidis is fighting against relegation from the WorldTour. The French formation is still on the right side of the line for the time being, but has only a small lead over Lotto Soudal, the first team in the relegation zone.
