In 2019, India split the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate regions to gain more control over the area. The region now consists of the two union territories ‘Ladakh’ and ‘Jammu and Kashmir’ and the area is governed directly from Delhi by two lieutenant governors.

Since then, according to Amnesty, civil society has been suppressed. This concerns in particular journalists, lawyers and human rights defenders. They face brutal interrogations, arbitrary travel bans, revolving door detentions and repressive media policies, while being denied access to appeal or justice in courts and human rights bodies, the human rights organization denounced.

“For three years, civil society and the media in Jammu and Kashmir have been subjected to a brutal crackdown by the Indian government, which is determined to suppress dissent with draconian laws and illegal practices,” said Aakar Patel, the chairman of Amnesty International. india.

In addition, the people of Jammu and Kashmir, especially the Hindu minority, are experiencing an increased number of unlawful killings by armed groups. An analysis of official data from the Indian government shows that the number of unlawful executions of civilians by armed groups has increased by 20 percent in the past three years.

Amnesty International calls on the international community to hold the Indian government accountable for its grave human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir and to promote immediate and independent investigations in the region.

The disputed Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan has been an area of conflict and violence for many years. Tens of thousands of people have died in separatist conflicts since the 1980s.
