In a speech in the run-up to November’s midterm elections, US President Joe Biden denounced his predecessor Donald Trump and his ‘MAGA Republicans’. ‘They adore dictators’ and ‘their willingness to resort to political violence is fatal to democracy’.

Biden, who as president so far avoided naming his predecessor — he often referred to as “the previous guy” — no longer bothered. Until recently, Biden also tried to refrain from criticizing the opposing team too openly. He liked to portray himself as a connecting figure, who could persuade the two parties to cooperate. Those two resolutions were announced on Thursday evening during a campaign speech in Philadelphia Independence Hallin which the country’s independence was declared in 1776.

“Donald Trump,” Biden said, “and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.” With MAGA Republicans, he was referring to Trump’s slogan, Make America Great Again. He had previously described the MAGA Republicans as “half-fascists.” Now he made more effort to distinguish. Not every Republican, not even a majority of Republicans, are MAGA Republicans. Not every Republican embraces their extreme ideology. But there is no doubt that the Republican Party today is dominated, controlled and intimidated by Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans. And that poses a threat to this country. MAGA Republicans don’t respect the Constitution. They don’t believe in legality. They do not recognize the will of the people and refuse to accept the results of free elections.”

They ‘are trying to take this country back in time, to a time when there was no right of choice, no right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry those you love’.

They adore dictators, he went on, and they aim for political violence.

The speech went under the heading ‘the struggle for the soul of the nation’. It was divided into two parts: the criticism of Trump and the ‘MAGA Republicans was followed by a list of achievements of Biden’s administration and his Democrats; the fight against covid, the creation of jobs, the government measures to lift children out of poverty.

Some of Biden’s opponents had mingled with the crowd and were shouting and shouting at the turn of events fucks disrupt for a short time. “They have a right to be delirious,” Biden said.

A few hours before Biden’s speech, Kevin McCarthy, the top Republican in the House of Representatives, had already delivered a preemptive counter-speech, highlighting the pessimism in the country, with a majority saying the country is on the wrong track, with inflation, record migration, increased violence, etc. Biden, he said, “prefers to divide, and belittle his fellow Americans,” rather than listen to their laments or criticisms.
