Annemiek van Vleuten, Ellen van Dijk and Shirin van Anrooij ride the double at the World Cycling Championships in Australia. They were drafted by national coach Loes Gunnewijk for the World Time Trial Championships (18 September) and the Road World Championships (24 September). Van Dijk will defend her time trial world title from last year in Wollongong.

The three time trialists have therefore also been selected for the road race. Then Marianne Vos, Demi Vollering, Floortje Mackaij and Riejanne Markus will also join the Dutch selection. That means that Gunnewijk leaves sprinter Lorena Wiebes at home on the hilly lap in Wollongong.

Van Vleuten and Vos
“The road race course is too tough for the real sprinters with about 2,600 vertical meters in total. In the first loop, the riders are presented with the Mount Keira, a climb of 8.5 kilometers. They then drive six times on the Wollongong City Circuit, which includes Mount Pleasant. That is a climb that resembles the Cauberg but is a bit steeper,” said the national coach.

The Netherlands is therefore counting on Tour winner Van Vleuten and green jersey winner Vos in the road race. “Annemiek has shown that she can go for the win on both climbing and difficult classic courses. With Marianne we have an asset for the final in which the punchers can come forward more”, says Gunnewijk.

Shirin of Anrooij
It is not for nothing that Shirin van Anrooij has also been drawn up. For the first time, U23 titles are awarded, although the U23 women do not drive their own competition. “But we only have the elite title at stake,” said Gunnewijk. “In the time trial, Shirin can score highly in the U23 category, but in the road race I purely looked at the strongest possible group, which we will definitely need in a race that is expected to be difficult to control.”
