12:55 – Jan Vertonghen (35) is about to complete his transfer to RSC Anderlecht. The defender had ended up on the second plan of trainer Roger Schmidt at SL Benfica and is therefore taking on a new challenge in his native country, where a two-year contract awaits him.

Vertonghen came over from Tottenham Hotspur to SL Benfica two years ago and made 57 appearances in Portugal for his old employer. Since Schmidt’s arrival, however, he was no longer sure of his starting place, which Anderlecht thus profit from and drag the experienced defender in at the last minute. Reportedly, the club does not have to pay a transfer fee for the Vertonghen, who will sign in Brussels until the summer of 2024.

The former Ajax player has already been spotted at Brussels airport and has expressed his expectation that the transfer will be completed today. This season Vertongen hopes Purple-White champion for the first time in six years. Anderlecht can use reinforcements for this, because currently the team of coach Felice Mazzù is in sixth place.

Belgium at the World Cup
In his transfer, the chance of playing time will have been a big factor for Vertonghen with a view to the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. With 139 international matches for Belgium, Vertonghen is record international with The Red Devils, with whom he hopes to win another top prize next winter. Earlier this summer, defenders Toby Alderweireld and Dedryck Boyata, with whom he normally forms the defense of the national team, already preceded him towards the Jupiler Pro League.
