After 1 season, coach Vincent Kompany’s Burnley has already dropped out of the Premier League. On the penultimate matchday, Tottenham had to win to keep hopes alive. Despite the opening goal by ex-Anderlecht player Bruun Larsen, it was still a defeat in London.

From the start of the season, Burnley was in the danger zone. But due to a series of non-defeats (and some points reduction from competitors), hopes for a rescue miracle flared up again.

Unfortunately for Burnley, the program did not go well in the final stretch. A point was scored against Manchester United, but things went badly at home against Newcastle. This is how it had to go to Tottenham with the knife at the throat.

Only a win could keep Burnley in the running until the last matchday. Tottenham themselves still had a great chance of getting into the top 4 – which entitles them to the Champions League.

Yet it was Burnley that opened the scoring. The 6th competition goal by Jacob Bruun Larsen, who was once active for Anderlecht, seemed to be one of gold value.

But the joy was short-lived. Pedro Porro took full advantage of the visitors’ unimpressive defensive work.

Burnley now had to do everything they could to score, but their backs were against the wall after half-time. The 2-1 by defender Micky van de Ven, who finished like an accomplished striker, was deserved. The final nail in Burnley’s coffin.

Burnley returns to the Championship after 1 season. Still with Vincent Kompany as coach?
