The Eyso Bridge in Kollum is in urgent need of replacement. Fungi, wood rot and vermin infest the woodwork while the iron parts are rusted.

The bridge needs to be replaced, while the municipality of Noardeast-Fryslân thought major maintenance would suffice. To make replacement possible, the city council has made more than 750,000 euros available this week.

For this amount, the municipality also wants to straighten the bend in the Kollumer Trekfeart at the site of the bridge. Now ships have to sail through that bend at the bridge. The original course of the Kollumer Trekfeart is of course straight and will be restored to that historical situation.

Bridge closure threatens

The Eyso Bridge connects the Kollumer residential area Tolhuis with the main road along the Kollumer Trekfeart and is therefore a necessary connection. The municipality emphasizes that the bridge is not unsafe now, but that it will eventually be closed to car traffic if nothing is done about it.

The defects already came to light in 2020. When it was time for maintenance last year, the condition of the bridge turned out to be even worse than expected. Severe corrosion and damage to the wood by fungi and vermin means that a total replacement is necessary.

Eysobrug or Eysobrêge?

The FNP wants to take advantage of the recovery to also change the name of the bridge to Eysobrêge. The frisianization should also apply to all other Dutch-language bridge names, because the faction states that the waters over which the bridges are located now also have the official Frisian name. Councilor Hanneke Jouta promised to come up with a complete list of Dutch-language bridges, after which the discussion about freshening can take place.
