Suspect Hans D., the 78-year-old man suspected of the murder of Annie De Poortere, appeared in person in the Ghent council chamber this morning. The council chamber has decided to continue to keep him under electronic supervision.

The 78-year-old HD, who is suspected of the murder in 1994 of his then wife Annie De Poortere in Sint-Martens-Latem, was present in person before the Ghent council chamber on Friday morning. The man had left the prison under electronic surveillance and appeared through the public areas with his lawyer Ashley Bickx. Both declined to comment before the start of the hearing. The council chamber has decided to continue to keep him under electronic supervision.

Hans D. was arrested last week by the investigating judge because he is suspected of the murder of his ex-partner Annie De Poortere. The woman from Sint-Martens-Latem disappeared 30 years ago and her body was found last weekend in a garden near her home.

The facts

On the day of her disappearance, Annie De Poortere was 48 years old. She was depressed at the time and took medication for it, but she had relapses every so often. This was partly due to alcohol abuse. On the Saturday in question, November 12, 1994, her then husband Hans D. had called a psychiatric hospital to readmit Annie. There was only room for her on Monday. What happened next remains unclear. What we do know is that five years after the disappearance, Annie De Poortere was declared ‘absent’ by the court, at the request of Hans D. This allows the inheritance to be divided and the marriage to be dissolved.

Last Saturday, human remains were found during excavation work in a garden. Important: that garden was shared with the house where Annie De Poortere and her ex-husband Hans D. lived in 1994. It concerns Annie. On Tuesday, Hans D. appeared to have made partial confessions during an interrogation. He allegedly admitted that he had buried Annie’s body in the garden. The now 78-year-old man has been arrested by the investigating judge on suspicion of murder. Today the council chamber decided to continue to keep him under electronic surveillance.
