PSV had a difficult time with Excelsior for an hour on Tuesday evening, but when the turbo came on for a moment, Rotterdam’s resistance was broken. Goals from Mauro Junior and Johan Bakayoko made the difference: 0-2.
The need to really take revenge for the defeat that PSV suffered against NEC last Saturday hardly seemed to exist against Excelsior in the first half. The leader in Rotterdam recorded zero shots on target, just like the home team. Marinus Dijkhuizen’s team soon saw seasonmaker Couhaib Driouech drop out with a hamstring injury.
PSV created very little, which made it a dull affair in the first half at Woudestein. Only top scorer Luuk de Jong should have increased his goal total. About five minutes before half-time he was sent clear in the penalty area, but placed the ball just on the wrong side of the post.

It was also extremely difficult immediately after the break, at Excelsior they had done well at the back. But PSV slowly put more and more pressure and while goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel made a good save from André Ramalho’s header, he had no chance against Mauro Junior’s shot. From the edge of the penalty area, the midfielder beautifully shot the ball into the intersection: 0-1.
It turned out to be a liberating goal, because just a few minutes later Johan Bakayoko made it 0-2. After a well-organized attack by PSV, with an assist from Malik Tillman, Bakayoko finished.
PSV chased for a third goal, Excelsior’s resistance was finally broken. There were chances, but no more goals. The difference with Feyenoord is again ten points, the Rotterdam team will play against last-place FC Volendam on Thursday.
