Tour of Flanders

The police have started an investigation into the supporters who threw beer over Mathieu van der Poel on the route along the Oude Kwaremont during the Tour of Flanders on Sunday. The report falls under the qualification of assault and battery, the Flemish Ardennes police clarified to VRT NWS.

Although the Tour of Flanders announced yesterday that it was an “incident-free edition”, the police today started an investigation into some supporters. During the Tour, they allegedly threw beer over Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) on the course along the Oude Kwaremont.

The Flemish Ardennes police drew up a report with the classification of assault and battery. They hope to identify the beer throwers based on the images shown on television and images circulating on social media.

Van der Poel, who won the Tour for the third time in his career, responded rather dryly to the incident. “Yes, there were some downpours on the Oude Kwaremont,” he said laughing, “but I was so focused on my effort that it didn’t bother me much.”
