Patrick Kluivert’s employment with Adana Demirspor lasted only five months. The 47-year-old trainer opened a book on Monday about his turbulent stay in Turkey. ‘We didn’t get our salary. One month no salary, two months no salary, three months no salary.’

Kluivert started his first job as head coach at a club well. Adana Demirspor was in third place in the Süper Lig for a long time and the club also achieved good results in the European context. After four games without a win, Kluivert and Adana Demirspor mutually decided to part ways at the end of last year.

In Rondo Kluivert elaborated on his farewell. ‘We continued on the right track, but at a certain point… The president had not yet put on his kicks. He stood on the field and started taking selfies on Instagram and went live. During the warm-up. That started to irritate the staff and me a bit. But we thought: maybe this is normal in Turkey.’

The financial picture also worried Kluivert. ‘We didn’t get our salary. One month no salary, two months no salary, three months no salary. At one point we thought: we work well, the results are great, but we don’t get paid. That also started to bother the players, that they were not being paid.’

No further
Kluivert himself said he could do without his salary for a while. ‘But my staff also had things they had to pay for. And the players… If they don’t get paid, that’s a problem. That started to take over. On a Monday the technical director met with the man who did all the contract negotiations. They didn’t want to go any further. Then I said, “I don’t want to continue either, so we’re breaking up.” They stopped paying us a salary.’

Kluivert has been out of work since his departure from Adana Demirspor.
