Evenepoel must score immediately: ‘Every second will count’

Remco Evenepoel starts today in the Itzulia 2024. The Basque stage race kicks off with a ten-kilometre time trial. A perfect match for the world time trial champion?

Evenepoel is already looking forward to it. The ten kilometer time trial is the ideal opportunity to immediately show his biggest competitors that he means business. And that competition is not bad in the Tour of the Basque Country. Big names such as Jonas Vingegaard, Sepp Kuss, Primoz Roglic and Juan Ayuso are also in action.

Immediately decisive

“The time trial could perhaps be decisive, because the stages are not particularly difficult,” Evenepoel said Sporza. “Every second will count.” If he wins, the leader of Soudal Quick-Step will immediately race in the leader’s jersey.

“The positive point is that we have control over the course, because the other teams have to attack,” says the ‘aero bullet of Schepdaal’. “It may be a long week, but having control in the Basque Country is not necessarily negative.”

What can we expect from the chrono test today? “The start is very technical and quite dangerous. Hopefully it stays dry, because there are those typical Spanish clinkers and tiles that can become slippery.”

“After that, it is very narrow in some passages, not even a Renault Clio wide. Finally, it is mainly divided to ensure that you are not at your limit after the plateau. It is difficult enough to make a difference,” says Evenepoel, who comes into action at 2:57 PM.
