Taiwan authorities said two men died of suspected food poisoning after eating char kway teow, a stir-fried noodle dish, at a Malaysian vegetarian restaurant in Taipei.

Eight people who dined at Polam Kopitiam Restaurant in the Far Eastern Department Store in Xinyi District on March 19, 21 and 22 showed symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea, and were taken to nearby hospitals, The Straits Times reported.

Among them, a 39-year-old man and a 66-year-old man were confirmed dead and at least four others were in critical condition, Focus Taiwan reported.

Taipei health authorities carried out food sample testing at the restaurant but have not found any bacteria commonly associated with food poisoning.

Other food samples such as cabbage, rice noodles and soy sauce, deemed with high risk of contamination, were also taken on March 26, but the results are expected in two weeks.
