You may have already noticed it when you went shopping in Lochristi today. Even today, many refrigerated counters in AD Delhaize, including those with fish, chicken, cheese and dairy products, remain eerily empty. “A lot will ultimately end up in the trash at the Delhaize distribution center,” says manager Dany Van Assche.

The farmers’ protests of the past week are largely over, but some things still have an impact on the supply to and from the distribution centers of the major food chains. In AD Delhaize in Lochristi, the manager makes things clear with signs: ‘Empty shelves due to the farmers’ strikes.’

Dany Van Assche: “The trucks were indeed unable to pass through, neither for supply to the power station nor to leave for the shops. Masses of fresh products that have not been left outside will therefore end up in the trash bin, especially those with a short expiration date. Products that we purchase directly ourselves do not pose a problem and there has been no shortage or interruption. I hear that the occupation has been lifted on Saturday afternoon (at 2 p.m., ed.), so we hope to receive deliveries again by Monday. It will take a few days before everything is in order again and the situation returns to normal.”

Aldi, Lidl and Colruyt also face the same problems. The tractors have disappeared from traffic, the empty shelves in your favorite store remain a reminder of an eventful week in the agricultural sector.
