Two British teenagers have been sentenced to life in prison for the “exceptionally brutal” murder of trans girl Brianna Ghey. “You singled her out because you thought she would be an easy target.”

The murder took place on February 11 last year. Sixteen-year-old trans girl Brianna Ghey was stabbed to death in a park in Cheshire, England, by Scarkett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe, both 15 at the time of the incident.

Serial killers

Jenkinson, who was obsessed with serial killers, was described by the judge as the “driving force” behind the murder and was sentenced to a minimum of 22 years in prison, Ratcliffe was sentenced to at least 20 years in prison. “You both participated in an exceptionally brutal and sadistic murder, motivated in part by her transgender identity. You singled her out because you thought she would be an easy target,” Judge Amanda Yip said during the sentencing. Both teenagers stared into space and gave no visible reaction as the judge read out the sentence.

The judge added that Jenkinson was motivated by a “deep desire to kill” and expressed concern after hearing that the teenager had “renewed the desire to kill” after her conviction. The now sixteen-year-old girl is said to have already drawn up a new “death list” during her detention. “If you remain a danger, you may never be released.”

In a victim impact statement read out in court, Brianna’s mother Esther Ghey said the two perpetrators would “always pose a danger to society”. “I would never want them to have the opportunity to act out their sadistic fantasies on another child.”

Although Jenkinson had pleaded not guilty to the murder and tried to pin the blame on Ratcliffe, she told a psychiatrist after her conviction that she had stabbed the victim “repeatedly” and how “exciting” she had found it. She had killed Brianna “because she thought she no longer wanted to be her friend” and “that way she would always be with me.”
