LTS does not mean LOOP. Yes, there is long support on the OS, but just because it is there doesn’t mean you have to use it for a long time. LTS OSs, especially in a country where a tool like VScode is needed (it is primarily a dev tool, it can do more, but primarily: a dev tool) usually has the policy: “update regularly”. Nobody says you have to run daily/canary, but being at least three LTS versions behind is a long way.

When it comes to LTS OSes that do enter their longer phases (i.e. not the next version) or even extended support phase, I think of industrial automation, isolated systems, and super specialized environments. Which usually go further into the 4 support tiers (general, extended, mature, retired). An offshore edge compute system, an embedded industrial automation appliance, or even POS environments: I expect extreme LTS OSing there. But I usually don’t expect VSCode there either, and if that were the case, then certainly not a rolling release VSCode, heck, in the ‘big brother that isn’t really a brother’, Visual Studio, an LTSC channel is available. Same goes for Python/Jupyter-like environments. But somewhere in the software tiering hierarchy you shouldn’t mix release forms and support forms. Then you get this kind of crap.

That said, I don’t quite know how packaging exactly works in this scenario (even according to Linus Torvalds, that’s the problem with desktop Linux that keeps many devs from releasing: packaging and updating is inconsistent across the ecosystem — is 18.06 already flatpack ?), you could argue that the package/installer/self-updater should perhaps have done a short dependency check, and then actually said: “nope, not today unless you update this lib yourself”.

Because beware: if you postpone updates long enough, you will soon enough be busy with projects instead of management.
