US President Biden said in a statement that US retaliation began today and “will continue at times and locations of our choosing.” According to the White House, the approximately 30-minute mission was “a success.”
Biden goes on to say that the U.S. does not seek “conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world,” but “let it be clear to anyone who wants to hurt us: if you harm any American, we will respond.”

The president is referring to Iranian-backed militias, which the US holds responsible for the attack on an American base in Jordan. Three American soldiers were previously killed. Just today, a ceremony attended by Biden took place in the US in honor of the soldiers, whose bodies recently returned to their home country.
According to ‘CNN’, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated in line with Biden’s words that the US “will take all necessary steps to defend the United States, our troops and our interests”.
The Syrian government confirms that the US has carried out attacks on Syrian territory near the Iraqi border. State media speak of deaths and injuries, but numbers are not yet mentioned. CENTCOM says that “125 precision munitions” were used in the American attacks.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the airstrikes destroyed 17 positions protecting Iranian militias in Al-Mayadeen and Al-Bokamal near the Syria-Iraq border, as well as positions near the city of Deir ez-Zor.

According to the Americans, the targets hit in today’s air strikes included command posts, intelligence centers and warehouses for missiles and drones. These are said to have been used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and other pro-Iranian militias to attack American troops in the region.
Iran has not yet responded to the airstrikes, but previously warned the Americans of “a strong response” if Iranian targets were targeted. According to the American news channel ‘CNN’, a senior White House official has indicated that no targets in Iran will be attacked because that would lead to further escalation in the region.
The US previously imposed sanctions on individuals and groups that collaborate with the Iranian armed forces. The US previously also carried out air strikes on targets of the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, after they have regularly attacked ships in the Red Sea since November.
